What was decided in the PSD leadership meeting in Vila Lac. Grindeanu: “The bearability limit has already been exceeded”

The PSD leadership met on Sunday, from 5:00 p.m., in a meeting of the party's National Political Council, at Vila Lac. The social democrats demanded, once again, the urgent adoption of the package of measures to relaunch the economy and, although the meeting took place in the context of a period of tension in the coalition marked by PSD dissatisfaction, the subject “was not discussed in depth”, according to some sources.

The PSD leaders present at the meeting voted unanimously for the appointments of the new heads of the PSD branches in Sectors 2, 4 and 6.

Rareş Hopincă, the mayor of Sector 2, becomes president of the PSD Sector 2 organization, Alexandru Hazem Kansou, executive secretary of PSD Bucharest, takes over the management of the branch in Sector 4 and Adrian Vigheciu, vice mayor of the Capital, takes over the headship of PSD Sector 6.

The new appointments come in the context in which the former leaders of these organizations announced their resignations on Saturday, following the failure of Daniel Băluță in the race for the position of general mayor of the Capital.

Although in recent weeks several party leaders have recalled the party's consultation on leaving the government and launched a series of attacks on Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, today's meeting did not address the topic of coalition tensions. There was also no mention of the survey, the results of which are expected after the adoption of the national budget for 2026.

“There was no in-depth discussion (ed. – about the problems in the coalition). It's been like this since we've known each other, in the coalition one thing is said, another is done,” said sources who participated in the meeting on Sunday evening for HotNews.

At the end of the meeting, through a press release, the social democrats demand, once again, the “immediate” adoption of the package they proposed for relaunching the economy. It is about a series of measures, negotiated in the coalition, on which the PSD conditions the adoption of the package for reducing public administration expenses.

PSD claims that the set of measures to relaunch the economy has a total budget impact of 3.39 billion lei, targeting over 5 million beneficiaries.

“We will not support one reform without the other,” say several PSD sources who participated in the National Political Council.

“The absolute priority of this moment is the cost of living and the standard of living of the Romanians. The adoption of the economic recovery package (…) cannot be blocked by sterile discussions about functions or political scenarios that generate instability,” said Sorin Grindeanu according to the PSD statement.

“I warn all those responsible that the limit of bearability has already been exceeded,” added the head of the PSD.

Through the press release, the social democrats convey that the economic recovery package is vital for maintaining jobs and for the survival of Romanian companies. At the same time, the solidarity package ensures minimum protection for those directly affected by austerity: pensioners with small pensions, children with disabilities, mothers with children, veterans or disabled people.

They also announce that they will propose financial aid in the coalition “in two equal installments, April and December, for 2.8 million people”:

– 1,000 lei for 1.24 million pensioners with incomes below 1,500 lei;

– 800 lei for 497 thousand pensioners with incomes between 1501-2000 lei;

– 600 lei for 612 thousand pensioners with incomes between 2001 and 3000 lei.

PSD conveys, through the same press release, that it will only support solutions that reduce the pressure on people and the economy and will politically sanction any attempt to prolong austerity at the expense of the vulnerable.

“The approval of these packages is necessary and must be carried out quickly before the adoption of the consolidated budget for 2026. The PSD will insist on the continuation of investments in large transport infrastructure, health, agricultural programs and the maintenance of the amount of investments in local communities at the level of 2025. to the taxpayers”, the press release also states.

The PSD meeting has started. It is the first time that the party leadership is meeting with the local leaders since they started an internal poll through which party members are consulted on whether or not the PSD should remain in government.

Also, the meeting comes after a rather tense period in the coalition. The Social Democrats launched a series of attacks on Prime Minister Bolojan, threatened to impeach him through a motion of no confidence and accused him of “accounting scammers”. In response to the PSD attacks, the prime minister declared that he does not rule out the option of a minority government.
