Mircea Lucescu (80 years old), the selector of the national team of Romania, was urgently hospitalized on Monday afternoon at the University Hospital in the capital, after his health suddenly worsened. Although in the last few days he seemed to be recovering, the doctors decided to hospitalize him for thorough investigations. “Il Luce” also considered looking abroad.

According to information appearing in the public space, “Il Luce” is dealing with a severe form of flu, contacted earlier this year, which did not respond properly to antibiotic treatment. Against the backdrop of a weakened immune system, medical problems increased, and specialists considered it necessary to closely monitor him in a hospital setting.
The admission took place in the context of a routine cardiological check-up, but the doctors found that the infection had not been completely treated. As a result, Mircea Lucescu will remain under medical supervision for at least a few days, during which he will undergo complex analyzes to assess his general state of health, according to fanatik.ro.

Medical problems have prevented the selector from carrying out his usual activity in recent weeks. He had to give up traveling to Antalya, where he intended to follow the Romanian teams in preparation, and he was no longer present at the stadiums either.
Despite the health problems, the football agenda remains an extremely important one. At the end of March, Romania will play the play-off match for the qualification to the World Championship, against Turkey. The match is scheduled for March 26, at the Beşiktaş Park stadium in Istanbul.
In the event of a victory, the tricolors will play the decisive match for qualification at the ground of the winner between Slovakia and Kosovo on March 31.

After a break of 38 years, Lucescu returned to the helm of the national team, signing a contract for a period of two years, with the main objective of qualifying the team for the World Championship in 2026.
