The head of Venezuelan diplomacy, Yvan Gil, expressed his satisfaction with her arrival. He stressed that this is part of a process that aims to “resolve existing differences of opinion through diplomatic dialogue.”
A “significant step” in US-Venezuela relations
Dogu previously worked in Colombia as charge d'affaires in the Venezuelan affairs department. CNN assessed her arrival in Caracas as a significant step towards restoring diplomatic relations between Washington and Caracas.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Wednesday that Dogu would eventually work in Caracas and that the United States would establish a diplomatic mission in Venezuela “very soon.” According to CNN, Washington also plans a permanent presence of the CIA in this country.
Maduro's capture and Venezuela's unclear future
The US withdrew its diplomats from Venezuela and suspended the operations of its embassy in Caracas in 2019. Earlier, Venezuela announced the severance of diplomatic relations with the US in response to its recognition of oppositionist Juan Guaido as interim president.
January 3 this year US troops carried out strikes against targets in Caracas and other cities in Venezuela. American commandos captured Nicolas Maduro and took him to the USA, where he stood trial, accused of, among others, for a “narco-terrorist conspiracy”. The duties of the president were taken over by Vice President Delcy Rodriguez, who, according to Washington, is willing to cooperate with the US.
