Previous attacks and major energy crisis
At the end of January, Ukraine also faced a severe energy crisis, following extensive power grid failures. The Minister of Energy, Denîs Şmîhal, reported on the morning of January 31 “a cascade stop” of the electricity network, after disruptions of the transmission lines between Romania and Moldova, as well as between the west and the center of Ukraine.
“The energy deficit in the system remains very high”the state operator Ukrenergo sent in a statement.
President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that “all necessary measures” were taken to restore the power grid and stabilize the situation in the short term.
Kyiv, seriously affected by the blackout
In Kyiv, residents faced a lack of electricity, heat and water amid extremely low temperatures. The capital's military administration reported at 11:00 a.m. local time that the subway was temporarily suspended due to a power outage.
The water supply was also interrupted in Kyiv due to problems in the power system, the Kyivvodokanal utility company announced on January 31.
