The European Commission presented the first European Union strategy on asylum and migration for the next five years. The document presents action priorities, including: strengthening migration diplomacy, better border control, and effective returns of those who do not qualify for asylum.

According to the European Commission, the strategy is intended to serve as “a compass for member states and ensure better migration management, while respecting European values and fundamental rights.”
According to the document, The EC plans to develop cooperation with international partnerscreate beneficial partnerships and fight migrant smugglers. The strategy also provides for: creating special centers for migrants on migration routes and the use of financial resources and visa policy as cooperation tools.
The Union is supposed to develop digital border management systemsincluding the so-called Entry and Exit System (EES) and European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). The strategy also assumes strengthening the role of Frontex and further increasing security in the Schengen area.
The EES system is a digital recording of entries and exits of non-EU foreigners in the Schengen area. Thanks to the EES, you can control who enters and leaves the EU faster and more precisely, as well as monitor the legality of stay of people from third countries.
Another element of the EU strategy is this a fair and flexible asylum and migration system. As the Commission has pointed out, the Pact on Migration and Asylum remains the cornerstone of EU policy. The strategy provides support for Member States in implementing new regulations, including preventing unauthorized movements of migrants.
The EC also plans further yearsdeveloping legal tools, such as the list of safe countries of origin. He also wants to create a common European return system with digitized processes.
The strategy also assumes better cooperation with third countries and use of existing EU tools to promote readmission.
Another element of the strategy is to attract qualified employees to increase the competitiveness of economies and fill gaps in the labor market. The document takes into account the use of digitalization and artificial intelligence in migration and asylum management and assumes financial support under the future EU budget for 2028-2034.
