Despite the popularity of the digital press, newspapers continue to be a part of modern life. And the old weekly journals remain free and environmentally friendly helpers in the household.
Instead of throwing them in the trash, use the unique properties of newsprint: it perfectly absorbs moisture, odors and grease, does not electrify, and gently polishes surfaces.
Housewives have collected 15 options for using newsprint in everyday life that will help you clean up and save you a lot of money.
1. Drying shoes
Stuff wet boots or sneakers tightly with crumpled newspaper sheets. The paper will absorb moisture within a few hours, maintaining the shape of the shoe.
2. Freshness of the refrigerator and cabinets
Place several sheets on the shelves to help absorb odors. Change once a week.
3. Storing seasonal shoes
Before storing your boots or sandals, stuff them with newspaper and wrap the pair in another sheet. This will protect against dust, moisture and unpleasant odors.
4. Perfectly clean glass and mirrors
Wet the glass with water or a weak vinegar solution and wipe with a crumpled sheet of newspaper. The paper does not leave lint or streaks, adding shine due to the printing ink.
5. Cleaning greasy surfaces
Has flour spilled, oil has spilled, or do you need to pick up a broken egg? Newspaper will do a better job than a paper towel: it doesn’t smudge, but absorbs instantly.
6. Protection of surfaces during repairs
Cover floors and furniture with newspapers while painting, assembling furniture, or crafting. They will reliably protect against drops, dust and shavings.
7. Storing vegetables
Wrap onions, garlic or beets in newspaper – the paper will absorb excess moisture, preventing rotting, and will prevent the root vegetables from drying out.
8. Protection of cereals from pests
Cover the shelves and bottoms of jars with cereals, flour or dried fruits with newspaper sheets. The smell of printing ink repels moths and food bugs. To enhance the effect, you can add bay leaf or cloves.
9. Fruit ripening
Place firm avocados, peaches or pears in a paper bag with a couple of crumpled sheets of newspaper. They will speed up the ripening process.
10. Eco-friendly packaging
Newspaper is a great alternative to bubble wrap for packaging fragile Christmas decorations, dishes or glass jars. It is not static and absorbs shock well.
11. Weed control
When constructing beds or flower beds, lay several layers of wet newspapers and a layer of soil or mulch on top. This will create an effective weed barrier that will rot over time.
12. Temporary pet bedding
You can line the bottom of a rodent cage or cat carrier with newspapers. They will absorb moisture and odor and are easy to replace later.
13. Papier-mâché base
A classic material for children's creativity or creating durable decorative objects.
14. Cleaning the fireplace or barbecue
Dry newspaper ash is easier to sweep away, but wet newspaper can be used to remove soot residue from the grate.
15. Cleaning cutting boards
Wipe the wooden board after washing with crumpled up damp newspaper – this will remove any remaining odors and lightly polish the surface.
Newsprint is a ready-made, free and multifunctional household consumable. By turning it into a useful tool, you not only save on napkins and sponges, but also contribute to sensible consumption.
