Two Ukrainians lost in the Maramureș Mountains, rescued after a night intervention in extreme conditions

Two Ukrainian citizens were rescued last night from the Maramureș Mountains, after a difficult mission carried out in extreme weather conditions. The emergency call was received on Thursday evening, when it was found that the two men, aged 34 and 36, had wandered into a hard-to-reach area, without supplies and already on the verge of hypothermia.

The rescue operation was attended by the mountain rescuers from Maramureș and the Border Police, who immediately went to the indicated area. The intervention was made difficult by the rugged terrain and the consistent layer of snow, which in some places exceeded two meters in height.
The air temperature dropped to minus 12 degrees Celsius, but due to the strong wind, the felt temperature reached minus 17 degrees. After about three hours of searching, the intervention teams found the two men, who had frozen clothes and were in an advanced state of exhaustion, barely able to move.
The rescuers gave them first aid on the spot, giving them hot tea and protein bars, then lowered them to safety at the base of the mountain. Later, the two were transported to the hospital in Vișeu, where they received specialized medical care.
After the discharge, the two Ukrainian citizens were picked up and taken to a migrant center in Sighetul Marmației, where they are currently awaiting legal formalities. The authorities remind the importance of information and proper equipment before traveling the mountain routes, especially in severe winter conditions.
