Zelensky spoke about his conversation with Macron at a meeting with journalists in Kyiv, European Pravda wrote on January 30.
According to the President of Ukraine, Macron said that he plans to change the law so that in the future detained Russian tankers will remain arrested in France.
In turn, Zelensky called on European countries to follow the example of France – to stop and arrest tankers of the “shadow fleet”.
“This is a question for all states. At least for the northern, maritime states that have influence on this. That is, tankers with Russian oil need to be stopped, and so that you can keep it, and not stop for a while and let go. That is, there is a movement towards such decisions, and it will definitely become more difficult for the Russians,” the President of Ukraine emphasized.
As Zelensky pointed out, the confiscation of tankers from the Russian “shadow fleet” is one of the tools that will speed up the end of the war.
The President of Ukraine reported in X that he had a conversation with Macron on January 28.
“We also talked about the fight against the Russian shadow fleet. Emmanuel spoke about the relevant work at the legislative level, we are counting on important decisions,” Zelensky wrote then.
Context
The aggressor country Russia uses the “shadow fleet” to circumvent international sanctions when trading its oil.
On January 22, Macron reported that the French Navy in the Mediterranean had boarded an oil tanker coming from Russia that was under international sanctions and suspected of operating under a false flag. We are talking about the Grinch tanker, which was sailing from the Russian port of Murmansk.
The tanker's captain, an Indian national, was arrested by French authorities but was later released and returned to the vessel.
On January 28, the Marseille prosecutor's office announced that they had arrested the Grinch tanker.
