On Thursday, the Norwegian government approved the purchase of missiles capable of hitting targets within a radius of up to 500 km, which means that their range will include, among others, base of the Russian Northern Fleet. Weapons worth approximately 19 billion kroner (PLN 7 billion) for the Norwegian army are to be produced in Poland.
This is the K239 Chunmoo missile system from the South Korean company Hanwha Aerospace. The system will provide the Norwegian Armed Forces with a new capability in the form of land-based precision weapons.
– This equipment gives the Norwegian military new capabilities. Our priority is to quickly strengthen Norway's defense capabilities and effective deterrence, said Defense Minister Tore O. Sandvik in a statement.
The contract will cover 16 launchers, a significant number of missiles with various ranges, as well as a training, logistics and support systems package. Deliveries of launchers and training materials are scheduled for 2028–2029, and missiles for 2030–2031.
The missiles are to be manufactured in Poland, where the Koreans plan to launch missile production lines in connection with a large order placed by Warsaw. Poland has ordered almost 300 such systems, known as Homar-K, and Polish plants will also supply other European customers, including Norway.
– Postponing the decision would risk delays and weakening defense capabilities – emphasized the Norwegian Minister of Defense.
Earlier this week, the Norwegian Parliament (Stortinget) also approved an increase in financing for the submarine program, allocating nearly 100 billion kroner (over PLN 36 billion) for the purchase of two additional units.
