Krasnoyarsk surgeons removed a liver tumor by “illuminating” it with green dye

For the first time, the Krasnoyarsk Regional Oncology Center performed a high-tech operation to remove a liver tumor with maximum preservation of healthy tissue. The regional Ministry of Health spoke about this.
Surgeons performed laparoscopic anatomical resection on a 44-year-old man using ICG fluorescence imaging technology. This means that before the operation the patient was intravenously injected with a safe dye – indocyanine green. Through special optics, the surgeon saw a clear boundary: healthy tissue glowed bright green, while the tumor-affected areas remained dark. This made it possible to remove the tumor while preserving every millimeter of valuable liver tissue, which is critical for a patient with concomitant cirrhosis.
“The patient was able to walk the very next day after the operation. Now he is fully caring for himself, feels satisfactory and is awaiting discharge after receiving histology,” said Andrey Mazaev, head of the department of x-ray surgical methods of diagnosis and treatment.
ICG technology has already been used in the oncology departments of the dispensary, but in such a case it was used for the first time.
