The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on Wednesday raided an election office in Fulton County, in the US state of Georgia, amid accusations launched by Donald Trump that his defeat in the 2020 election was the result of widespread electoral fraud, according to Reuters and AFP.

The FBI said in a brief emailed statement that its agents executed a warrant to search the Fulton County Election and Operations Center in Union City, a large, warehouse-like location opened by Georgia officials in 2023, and described the action as a “court-authorized law enforcement activity.”

Computers and ballots targeted by investigators

FBI agents wanted to seize computers and ballots as part of an investigation into possible election meddling, a law enforcement official told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

The newspaper and other US publications reported that the operation was related to Donald Trump's allegations that Joe Biden defeated him by fraud in the 2020 presidential election.

Last week in Davos, the Republican leader said the election five years ago was “rigged” and that “soon people will be prosecuted for what they did”.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump explicitly said that former special counsel Jack Smith, who had opened two criminal cases against him, should be prosecuted.

Trump was accused by Smith of plotting to overturn the results of the 2020 election and of mishandling classified documents after leaving the White House.

Neither case went to trial, and Smith, in accordance with the Justice Department's policy not to prosecute a sitting president, dropped both cases after the Republican victory in the 2024 presidential election.

Also indicted in Georgia

In 2020, Donald Trump was narrowly defeated by Joe Biden in Georgia and, before the count was completed, urged a local election official in a phone call to “find 11,780 votes” that would have won the election in that state.

In 2023, Trump and 18 other suspects were indicted in Georgia on a series of felonies related to an alleged effort to undermine the state's vote, but a judge dismissed the case in November.

This month, Trump asked a Georgia court for $6.2 million in attorney fees he paid to fight criminal election interference charges brought by the county's chief prosecutor, Fani Willis.
