US Secretary of State Marco Rubio asked China Sunday to encourage Iran not to close the Ormuz Strait, after American aviation hit the main nuclear installations of Iran, which the head of US diplomacy warned that if he closes the vital straits for oil transport, he would make a terrible mistake, “Reuters,

Marco Rubio's statement, made at a show at the Fox News, occurs after the Iranian press reported that the Iranian Parliament on Sunday approved the closure of the Ormuz strait, as a result of the American attack on Iranian nuclear installations, but the final decision must be taken by the Supreme Council of National Security.

“I encourage the Chinese government in Beijing to contact (Iran) in relation to this, as they depend largely on the Ormuz Strait for China's supply”, Rubio argued.

“It would be economic suicide for them”

“If (the Iranians) do this, it will be a terrible mistake. It would be economic suicide for them if they do. We have options to manage this problem, but other countries should be careful about this. The economies of other countries would be affected much more than ours,” the head of the US diplomacy said about a possible decision to block Iran.

If Iran will make such a decision, it would involve a massive escalation likely to receive an answer from the US and other countries, Rubio said.

The importance of the Ormuz strait

Through the Ormuz Strait, about 20% of the world exported oil transits. Stopping this flow would lead to an increase in oil price. During the period since the launch of the last Friday of the Israeli bombing campaign on Iran, he refrained from hitting the American economic interests by blocking the Ormuz straits, for fear of military reprisals.

But, with the air attack carried out by the US on Saturday night on Sunday on Iranian nuclear installations, Isfahan and Natanz, in Tehran is now taken into account a response to disturb the oil traffic passing through the Ormuz Strait.
