Coal miners of SUEK-Krasnoyarsk joined the patriotic action “Blockade Bread”

January 28 15:37

Activists of the Youth Council of the Borodino Mine reminded their colleagues about one of the most important dates in the history of our country, the key event of the Great Patriotic War – the lifting of the siege of Leningrad on January 27, 1944.

The feat of the residents of the city on the Neva and the soldiers defending it did not allow the plans of the Nazi command to come true – to wipe Leningrad off the face of the earth. Being surrounded by the enemy for almost 900 days, Leningraders – men, women and children – continued to work for the good of the front in the factories that survived the bombing. Tens of thousands of people daily donated blood for wounded soldiers, schools and institutes operated, and newspapers were published in the city.

The siege of Leningrad claimed more than a million lives. Many died during the bombing; during the blockade, about 150 thousand shells were fired at the city and over 107 thousand incendiary and high-explosive bombs were dropped. But many more adults and children died from exhaustion. As Vladimir Reich, a veteran of the Borodino Loading and Transport Department (a branch of JSC SUEK-Krasnoyarsk), who experienced all the horrors of the blockade as a teenager, recalled: “The worst thing was losing the cards that allowed you to get a ration of 125 grams of bread.”

It is he who is the symbol of the “Siege Bread” memorial campaign. Along with a leaflet reminding all living people of the resilience and heroism of the inhabitants of besieged Leningrad, 125-gram pieces of black bread were handed to the miners of the Borodino open-pit mine on Remembrance Day before the morning shift by activists of the enterprise’s Youth Council.

“This small piece of bread saved the lives of hundreds of thousands, gave hope and faith in victory,” says road foreman of the mountain track section of the Borodino open-pit mine Sergei Voronin. “This action is a tribute to the residents of the besieged city and the liberating heroes. I think it’s right that our company always hosts such events.”

The “Blockade Bread” campaign has been supported by coal workers at SUEK-Krasnoyarsk enterprises for many years. Like many other patriotic events that are held regularly during the celebration of Defender of the Fatherland Day, Victory Day, Day of Remembrance and Sorrow and other memorable dates of our country.
