The General Mayor of the Capital, Ciprian Ciucu, stated, on Thursday evening, to Euronews Romania, that the financial situation of the City Hall is “embarrassing”, having only five million lei in its accounts, amounts comparable to those of some of the rich Romanians. Ciucu announces that he will take “unpopular” measures, with the abolition or merger of institutions, to which the increase in the price of STB tickets could be added. The decision regarding the closure of the first institutions will be taken next week.
“Bucharest does not manage its own finances, we do not have this flexibility, this minimum competence. We are dependent on the Government. We received 317 million. After making all the payments and partially paying the subsidy, we could not even pay all of it, regarding STB and heating, Termonegetica, at the moment, hold on tight, we still have somewhere around 5 million lei in the City Hall's budget Capital”, said, on Thursday evening, the general mayor of the Capital, Ciprian Ciucu, quoted by News.ro.
He states that the amounts are comparable to those of rich Romanians: “There are many Romanians, some rich, maybe even politicians, who have more money in their accounts than the Capital City Hall. It is absolutely embarrassing.”
To deal with this situation, the general mayor announces that “there will also be unpopular measures, because the knife has actually reached the bone”.
“It is very likely (…) and it is also necessary to increase the price of the trip for STB. I am put in the position of making many structural reforms. Some heavy ones. Mergers, restructuring, closures of companies, administrations, public institutions”, explained the general mayor of the Capital.

He specified that, on the agenda of next week's General Council meeting, there will be draft decisions for the closure of some institutions. “A small part, a first series of public institutions will be closed. It is about a few institutions that no longer have any reason to exist, but that spend money on rents, on cars”, explained Ciprian Ciucu.
On January 13, the mayor of the Capital, Ciprian Ciucu, announced, after receiving only 317 million lei from the Government until the PMB budget vote, most likely in March, that the PMB does not even have money to cross the street.
He stated that, by the budget law for the year 2026, it is imperative that the Bucharest City Hall receives 70% of the city's budget.
Ciucu announces that he will propose a pact to all the parties in the General Council and in the Parliament, so that the Capital City Hall is functional.
