Romanians could take advantage of a highway that will cross Bulgaria and reach Greece

The road to Greece could become faster and safer in the coming years, but the pace differs from country to country. While the Romanian authorities are analyzing options for shortening the route between Bucharest and Giurgiu, Bulgaria has already started the steps to build a highway to Veliko Târnovo.

The highway that will connect Ruse to Veliko Tarnovo should be completed by 2030, according to the estimates of the Bulgarian authorities. From Veliko Târnovo, the route will be connected to the already existing highway network, which will allow a continuous high-speed road to the south of Bulgaria and, implicitly, to Greece.

In order for Romania to be able to fully benefit from this connection, it is necessary to modernize the infrastructure on the national territory. The National Road Infrastructure Administration Company (CNAIR) plans to build a new mixed road and rail bridge over the Danube at Giurgiu-Ruse.

At the same time, the construction of a high-speed road between Giurgiu and Bucharest is being analyzed. Feasibility studies are currently underway that will form the basis of the decision to build either an expressway or a highway. The new artery would connect with the A0 Highway, the belt of the Capital.

Further, motorists could have quick access to the A3 and A7 Motorways, connecting to Siret, thus creating a modern road corridor crossing Romania from south to north.
