The Krasnoyarsk Road Administration explained why the sidewalks are not cleared of ice

January 26 12:17

The Krasnoyarsk Road Department answered why sidewalks began to be sprinkled more often, rather than cleaned.

According to experts, when the thermometer drops below −10°C, ice 5 centimeters thick becomes almost monolithic, and it is extremely difficult to destroy it manually. If the ice layer exceeds 10 centimeters, the task becomes impossible.

Another factor is the low speed of manual work. Under ideal conditions, one worker, using a standard 1-2 kg ice ax and a shovel, can clear about 50 square meters of sidewalk in a day. At this rate, cleaning large areas would take weeks.

“Warmer weather is expected soon, and we will be able to speed up the process of clearing sidewalks,” the department said. On days when the temperature rises, road workers will be able to switch to active mechanized cleaning.

To quickly respond to problems, city residents are asked to report specific problem areas in the comments on their information resources. All requests are promised to be taken into account in the work schedule.
