US President Donald Trump has threatened Canada with 100% tariffs on all its exports to the United States if it strikes a trade deal with China, according to Bloomberg.

Calling Canada's prime minister “Governor Carney”, Trump said the neighboring country was “grievously wrong” for allowing China to increase its exports of electric vehicles.

“China is going to eat Canada alive, it's going to completely devour it, including destroying businesses, social fabric and the general living environment,” the US leader said in a post on social media.

“Should Canada make a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% tariff on all Canadian goods and products entering the US,” he added.

The Canadian Prime Minister was in China

After meeting President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Friday, the first visit to the Chinese capital by a Canadian leader in eight years, Prime Minister Mark Carney said he expected the Chinese side to reduce tariffs on Canadian canola, also known as canola.

On the other hand, 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles will enter the Canadian market, with customs duties of approximately 6%, with a 100% surcharge being eliminated. China will also remove visas for Canadians, Carney said.

Shortly after signing the deal, the Canadian leader gave a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he complained about the coercive measures of the great powers, an implicit criticism of the actions of the Trump administration.

The US president responded by accusing Canada of being ungrateful for US military protection. Canada “lives because of the United States,” Trump also said, a claim rejected by Carney. In addition, Trump withdrew Canada's invitation to join the Peace Council.

It is unclear for now what Donald Trump will consider a deal. The Canada-China pact was essentially a trade exchange, focused on agriculture and electric vehicles.

Relations between Washington and Ottawa have worsened since Trump's return to the White House. The president's decision to raise tariffs on Canadian goods sparked outrage, and many Canadians chose to boycott American products and avoid travel to the US.

Canada, which has historically directed much of its trade south to the US, has responded with an attempt to increase trade relations east to Europe and west to Asia.
