French President Emmanuel Macron and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk signed a Polish-French treaty on enhanced cooperation and friendship on May 9, 2025 in Nancy, regarding military, economic, social and cultural issues. The treaty entered into force on January 22.

On the occasion of the entry into force of the Treaty of Nancy – a groundbreaking Polish-French international agreement on enhanced cooperation and friendship – the deputy head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Henryka Mościcka-Dendys, met with her counterpart at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Anne-Marie Descôtes – we read in a Thursday entry on the MFA account on the X platform.

The meeting was devoted to specific projects that “Poland and France will implement together, including in the areas of security and defense, economic and industrial cooperation, mobility and infrastructure, as well as culture and science.”

Mościcka-Dendys – quoted by the ministry – emphasized that “the importance and practical role of the treaty are greater today than when it was signed.” She added that “Poland is ready to fully implement the Treaty to further strengthen its strategic partnership with France.”

Additionally, on platform X, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs commented on the entry into force of the treaty with the words: “Poland and France take joint responsibility for the security of Europe.”

The provisions of the Polish-French treaty included, among others: commitment to provide mutual assistance in the event of attack, including the use of military means, in accordance with NATO and EU obligations, increasing cooperation and interoperability of the French and Polish armies, supporting joint projects, artistic co-productions and initiatives promoting history, disseminating cultural works of both countries, exchanging information on the Polish and French nuclear construction programs and cooperation between national industries to create a European supply chain in nuclear energy, joint activities for new technologies such as AI, conducting research on raw materials critical issues, assistance in the reconstruction of Ukraine and the establishment of April 20 as Polish-French Friendship Day. The document also includes commitments regarding migration policy, higher education, education and language promotion.

The document was signed in Nancy in eastern France, a city connected with the common history of both countries – this is where King Stanisław Leszczyński settled after his exile from the country. The date was not chosen randomly either – May 9 is Europe Day.

The new treaty will replace the previous agreement between Poland and France, signed in 1991 and considered obsolete. It is compared with the treaties that France previously signed with neighboring countries: Germany, Italy and Spain. (PAP)
