According to the official Russian agency RIA Novosti, considered a faithful spokesperson of the Kremlin, the FSB detained a Moldovan agent who allegedly collaborated with the intelligence services of the Republic of Moldova.

“The Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation prevented the illegal activity of an agent of the Moldovan special services”, noted the cited source, referring to a press release of the Russian structure. According to him, in December last year, that person would have come to Moscow to fulfill a mission of the Intelligence and Security Service (SIS) from Chisinau.

The man was detained during the preparation phase of the mission, and correspondence with a curator from Chisinau was allegedly found in his confiscated electronic devices.

According to the Russian media, the detained person allegedly admitted his crime, testified, and was later placed in custody.

The investigative bureau of the FSB opened a criminal case on the article “confidential collaboration with a foreign state.” And the individual risks up to eight years in prison.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) of the Republic of Moldova reacted, stating that “verification actions are being taken, including through the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Moscow. We will return with additional information, as it becomes available.”

The reaction of the leader from Chisinau

When asked about the detention and Moscow's accusations against the Intelligence and Security Service, the president of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, replied that they are false.

“The risks to our citizens are real and we have spoken about this. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has warned citizens that, unfortunately, there are several cases where they are arrested and imprisoned without real reasons. I want to tell citizens that we have an embassy and consular services, and everyone who needs support can contact our colleagues in Moscow. I repeat, these accusations are false, including those directed against the Intelligence and Security Service.” explained Maia Sandu.

Details of the alleged agent

Meanwhile, some media sources from the Republic of Moldova mention that the detained person is the former presidential adviser of Igor Dodon, former head of state and current president of the Socialist Party of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM).

It is about Serghei Mișin, who allegedly has connections with the fugitive oligarch Ilan Șor. According to the same sources, his detention would take place against the background of internal settlement of accounts within the organized criminal group led by Ilan Şor, who is hiding from justice from Chisinau to Moscow. Also, Mișin allegedly came into conflict with people from Șor's entourage, after criticizing the oligarch's role in the destabilization of Chişinău in a podcast from November last year, being considered the Kremlin's main tool in this regard.
