President Maia Sandu returned on Thursday with new statements on the topic of a union with Romania, she emphasized that “for now” there is no majority in the Republic of Moldova for such a thing, so “we are strictly following the decision of the citizens”.
But she emphasized that this option “would guarantee both peace and belonging to the free world”.
“Big countries are trying to create spheres of influence, and cooperation between states is weakening, making the world more uncertain and dangerous, especially for small countries. In our region, but also on the entire continent, Russia remains a major source of destabilization,” said Maia Sandu.
Maia Sandu: Protection of Romania would guarantee our peace
“I think we have to focus on two fundamental objectives. To keep the peace and to remain part of the free world, the democratic world,” the Moldovan head of state said.
“This can be ensured by joining the European Union or, possibly, it could be ensured if the Republic of Moldova were under the protection of Romania. For the first option, we have the support of the majority of citizens, we saw this in the referendum”, explained Maia Sandu, according to Deschide.md.
“For the second option, which could also guarantee us peace and belonging to the free world, there is, for the time being, no majority. We are a democratic country and we go strictly by the decision of the citizens,” she said, also specifying that she did not discuss with European leaders on the subject of a potential union with Romania.
“Aand vote for the union with Romania”
Last week, the president of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, declared that “if a referendum were to be held, I would vote for union with Romania”.
“You see what is happening around. It is difficult for a small country like the Republic of Moldova to survive, under the pressure of Russia, as a democratic and sovereign country”, Maia Sandu also said, who admitted that at the moment there is no majority for the union with Romania. “However, there is a majority that supports integration into the European Union, and this is the goal we are pursuing,” she added.
The Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova, Alexandru Munteanu, also declared that he would vote for union with Romania in a referendum on this issue, but, as Prime Minister, he must fulfill the will of the majority of the population, which decided that the country's objective is European integration.
After that, the Socialist Party of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM), led by former pro-Russian president Igor Dodon, asked the state institutions to indict president Maia Sandu for treason.
And the Russian foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, claimed on Tuesday that the plans of the president of Moldova, Maia Sandu, to organize a referendum on reunification with Romania would be destructive for the statehood of Moldova.
