Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that Iran would be “wiped off” the map if Tehran orchestrated his assassination, the US president's reaction following threats from a senior Iranian military official, according to France Presse.
“I gave very clear orders. If anything happens, they will wipe them off the face of the earth,” he said in an interview with the News Nation channel broadcast on Tuesday.
Earlier on the same day, Iranian general Abolfazl Shekarchi threatened the American leader with death if Washington carried out an attack on Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
“Trump knows that if he touches our leader, we will not only cut off his hand, and there are no rumors,” the officer told Iranian state media.
The US president has repeatedly threatened to intervene militarily to end the crackdown on the December 28 protest movement, one of the largest since the proclamation of the Islamic Republic in 1979.
Several voices in the Iranian diaspora, including 2003 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi, have suggested that Washington take “highly targeted action,” particularly against Ali Khamenei.
Shortly after his arrival in the White House a year ago, Trump also threatened to “destroy” Iran if Tehran threatened his life.
