The sovereign of Great Britain, King Charles, visited, on Monday, the exhibition “Maria of Romania, the artist queen”, organized by the Romanian Cultural Institute to mark 150 years since its birth. He admired the watercolor creations of the most beloved queen of Romania, together with the remarkable botanical art in his Majesty collection, “Transylvania Florilegium”.
The watercolors painted by Queen Maria are presented for the first time, in London, along with the botanical art in her collection in an exhibition that aims to celebrate the natural beauty of Romania and to remember one of the most beloved personalities in national history.
King Charles of Great Britain was the special guest of the exhibition organized at the Garrison Chapel Gallery of The King's Foundation in central London. He was welcomed Laura Popescu by the ambassador of Romania in the United Kingdom, and the director of the Romanian Curltural Institute, Aura Woodward.
The King's Foundation, which hosts the unique exhibition, “carries out a number of projects in Romania, reflecting the long-term affection of its Majesty for our country and its profound interest for landscape, biodiversity and cultural heritage,” the organizers in a statement said.
The exhibition is free and can be visited between September 19 and October 12, between 11:00 and 8:00 pm to Friday, and between 11: 00-16: 00 Saturday and Sunday.
“Romania does not have a better friend today, better positioned in the world. The love of His Majesty for our country should be a source of inspiration even for some of our former leaders,” noted Dragoş Stanca, one of the coordinators of the exhibition.
King Charles III of Great Britain and Queen Mary of Romania are linked as blood relatives in the Dynasty of Queen Victoria-he is the great-grandfather of his grandfather's cousin.
Queen Mary of Romania (1875-1938) was the granddaughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom through her father, Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, the second son of Queen Victoria. Thus, Maria was primary cousin with King George V of Great Britain, the grandfather of Queen Elizabeth II. In other words, King Charles is a great-grandfather of Queen Victoria, and Queen Mary of Romania was, in turn, a granddaughter of Victoria.
