Ukraine's armed forces are introducing a new element of air defense aimed at transforming the existing system: small groups that will operate interceptor drones. The measure is taken in the context of the country preparing for new large-scale Russian attacks, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday, according to Reuters.
Ukraine is still reeling from a wave of Russian strikes earlier this month that left thousands of apartment blocks without electricity and heating, particularly in the capital Kiev.
Zelenskiy has repeatedly called for strengthening air defenses, including through increased support from Ukraine's Western allies.
“There will be a new approach to the use of air defense by the Air Force, in terms of mobile fire groups, interceptor drones and other means of short-range air defense,” Zelenskiy said in his nightly video message. “The system will be transformed.”
The President announced the appointment of a new Air Force Deputy Commander, Pavlo Yelizarov, who will coordinate and develop this initiative.
Ukraine rapidly developed its drone production capabilities after Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022 and has focused on interceptor drones as an effective and less expensive solution to counter Russian attacks.
In his remarks, Zelensky warned Ukrainians to be “extremely vigilant” in the prospect of further anticipated Russian attacks.
“Russia has prepared for a strike, a massive strike, and is waiting for the moment to implement it,” he said, urging every region in the country “to be ready to react as quickly as possible and help the population.”
Both Zelenskiy and Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha warned over the weekend that Ukrainian intelligence services had observed Russia conducting reconnaissance missions over specific targets, particularly transformer stations that feed nuclear power plants.
The president also said he had asked Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko to make decisions this week on issues arising from the recent attacks, including giving bonuses to tens of thousands of emergency workers working to restore heat and electricity.
