The house doesn’t smell “old”: I use a systematic approach and get rid of the “smell” even from an old living room

An unpleasant smell, which is usually called the aroma of “old age,” is just a complex of stagnant air, dust, moisture and ingrained aromas.

It can be overcome by acting systematically on the main causes.

1. Restore air circulation

Ventilate all rooms regularly, even in winter. Use hoods in the kitchen and bathroom. Consider purchasing a dehumidifier or ionizer purifier if dampness is an issue.

2. Clean odor traps

Carpets, curtains, upholstered furniture and mattresses require deep cleaning. Use a steam cleaner, take things to the dry cleaner or treat them with special sprays. Washing textiles (covers, curtains) is required.

3. Use natural absorbents

Place open containers with baking soda or activated carbon in corners and cabinets. Change them every 1-2 weeks. They silently absorb odors.

4. Carry out disinfectant cleaning

Wipe all surfaces (shelves, window sills, walls) with a solution of table vinegar and water (1:1). Vinegar neutralizes odors rather than masking them.

5. Check your technique

Clean or replace the filters in your air conditioner, hood, or air purifier. Clogged filters themselves become a source of odors.

A combination of these steps will return your home to a feeling of freshness and cleanliness without the expense or harmful chemicals.
