The artist, an opponent of Donald Trump, criticized ICE for “Gestapo tactics” and dedicated a song to Renee Nicole Good, the woman fatally shot by US immigration police on January 7.
Bruce Springsteen called for a strong backlash against ICE during his concert in New Jersey on Saturday. He dedicated the song “The Promised Land”, released in 1978, to Renee Nicole Good. The song in question presents the rebellious desires of a man persecuted by fate, according to Euronews.com and News.ro.
The musician urged the audience not to remain impassive and told ICE to “get the hell out of Minneapolis.”
“If you believe in the rule of law and that no one is above it, if you oppose the invasion of American cities by heavily armed and masked federal troops using Gestapo-like tactics against our fellow citizens, if you believe you don't deserve to be murdered for exercising your American right to protest, then send this president a message,” he said.
“The United States, the ideals and values it has embodied for 250 years, are being tested like never before in modern history,” warned the musician who, after opposing Ronald Reagan or the war in Iraq, entered into a dispute with President Donald Trump. The two septuagenarians – 76 years old for the musician, 79 for the president – have been arguing from a distance since 2017. The first qualifies the second as a “threat” or a “tyrant in the making”, the second qualifies the first as “stupid”, “stupid as his legs”.
On January 7, a 37-year-old woman, Renee Nicole Good, was fatally shot at the wheel of her car by an ICE agent in the city of Minnesota. Her death triggered a series of demonstrations. Donald Trump defended the thesis of the legitimate defense of the policeman, a version strongly contested by the local democratic opposition, with the help of video recordings.
