The President of Finland reacts to Donald Trump's threats. “I don't believe it”

Why is this important?

Finland was among eight countries – along with Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Great Britain and the Netherlands – against which Trump announced the imposition of tariffs because of their attitude towards American claims.

Previously, these countries opposed US interference in the affairs of Greenland and Denmark and decided last week to send their soldiers (numbering from one to a dozen), including liaison officers and instructors, to the island for training purposes. Increased tariffs on trade with these countries would be withdrawn only after the Americans took control of Greenland.

What did the President of Finland say?

— We are trying to de-escalate the situation in Greenland. At the same time, we are trying to find a solution for Ukraine, said Stubb, who is participating in the World Economic Forum in Davos that started on Monday. He admitted that despite the “inflammatory situation”, he managed to talk to US President Donald Trump. — Sometimes President Trump listens, sometimes he doesn't, Stubb replied at a conference for Finnish media, emphasizing that the current situation in Greenland is the “most difficult moment” of his presidency since March 2024 so far.

— This is difficult for the Finns because it is such a close ally (in the Scandinavian region) as Denmark. And about such fundamental issues as territorial integrity, sovereignty and the right to self-determination, he emphasized. According to Stubb, the European Union has many tools to counter U.S. tariff threats, and Finnish-U.S. relations are now “stronger than ever before.” This includes, he enumerated, issues of defense cooperation and orders for the construction of icebreakers in Finnish shipyards.
