Dino catches up with Ladybug. The gap has narrowed

The Portuguese Biedronka crossed the threshold of three thousand stores at the end of 2019 and then grew by over 1.5 thousand stores in a decade. This means that at that time it was growing by an average of 150 stores per year. It is currently maintaining a similar pace, because according to data from the end of December, the annual pace was 152 supermarkets. 181 stores were opened in 2025 and 29 were closed.

However, its Polish competitor is growing at twice the rate. The Dino Polska chain grew by as many as 345 new stores in 2025, and 100 only in the last three months of the year. In the last quarter, more new stores were added than Lidl opened in the entire year (the company recently reported that it was approaching a thousand stores, compared to 900 at the end of 2024).

At the end of December 2025, the number of stores in the chain was 3,033, the company announced in a statement on its website.
If both chains continue to grow at a similar pace as in 2025, they will equal the number of stores in just over four years. In 2010, when Dino had only 111 stores, the difference was 1,538 stores, now it is only 840.
The sales area of Dino stores amounted to 1,200.3 thousand. sq m compared to 1,061.2 thousand sq m a year ago. In the case of Biedronka, it is PLN 2,788.8 thousand. m, which shows that although Dino Biedronka is catching up with the number of stores, these stores are much smaller.
Big difference in revenue per store
There is a difference, however, when it comes to revenues per store. Due to the fact that Dino usually locates its stores in smaller towns, its revenues are correspondingly lower.
In the third quarter of last year the revenues of the Dino network amounted to PLN 8.8 billion (+15% y/y), which means just over a million per month per store. Net profit amounted to PLN 482 million (+10% y/y), which means approximately PLN 55,000. PLN per store per month
For comparison, in Biedronka, revenues per store in 2025 amounted to PLN 2.35 million per month, which is more than twice as much.
However, Dino is starting to open stores in larger centers, including Warsaw, where the chain already has appropriate logistics. The company is preparing for more store openings in 2026, which partially affects capital expenditure. It opens approximately two distribution centers a year, and the cost of building one is estimated at PLN 130-150 million.
