Folk calendar

Epiphany Christmas Eve, Hungry Evening

Epiphany Eve is the day before Epiphany (Epiphany), on which people prepared themselves for the holiday by fasting. That’s why the evening was called hungry: it was customary to eat only juices – a special dish made from grains, as well as lean porridge, vegetable pancakes and honey pancakes.

It was believed that during Epiphany snow acquired special properties, so people tried to collect it and use it for various purposes. The women knew that only Epiphany snow could whiten any canvas. They also believed that snow collected on Epiphany Eve could heal ailments, and if you wash yourself in a bathhouse with water heated from such snow, you can preserve your beauty for a long time.

In ancient times, a custom arose that has survived to this day – going to the river at midnight on Epiphany to fetch water. Having brought the water home, they preserved it: they said that it could stand in a closed vessel without spoiling, and had the same wonderful properties as Epiphany snow.

For this evening there were many signs about the weather and the future harvest. The starry sky foreshadowed that bread would be harvested, snowfall – that buckwheat would ripen, and a blizzard – that bees would swarm well. In addition, strong winds from the south foreshadowed a stormy summer. They also said: “The bright stars will give birth to the bright white stars,” which meant that the sheep would bear a large offspring.
