Romania debuted with a failure at the European Men's Handball Championship, 34-40 against Portugal. The selector George Buricea and the coordinator Daniel Stanciuc drew the conclusions.
Romania has compromised its chances of qualifying for the next phase of the European Championship. He still has Denmark and North Macedonia to play. Against the Nordics, the big favorites to win the competition, even a miracle is out of the question.
Selector George Buricea: “From that moment, Romania will become a very good team”
“We had some good moments, but we lacked consistency. For 10 minutes, we were level with Portugal. Then there were 3 minutes of technical fouls, and such a valuable team charges you immediately. They distanced themselves, we ran the whole game to get closer.
It is clear that we have to improve our game. The same mistakes appeared in the warm-up matches. A silly pass, an intercepted pass, easy goals for the opponents. We need to eliminate errors. From that moment, Romania will definitely become a very good team.
From my point of view, the Danes form the best team in the world. We will try to be part of the show, we will give our best. We want to enjoy the atmosphere, the handball. Such moments happen very rarely in life,” said George Buricea, according to EHF.
Daniel Stanciuc was Romania's best scorer against Portugal, 8 goals from 14 shots.
We played against a great team. We've complicated our game, it's hard to always be in a chase. Too many mistakes in the first half, we also had some good moments in the second half. But it's not enough. For us it is only the second European Championship in 28 years. We are here to give our best. It will be a dream come true to play with a full house against Denmark. It's a dream to meet the best players in the world. We have to enjoy it!
