Let us recall that in connection with US President Donald Trump's announcements of the annexation of Greenland, which formally belongs to Denmark, several European countries, including: Sweden, Norway, Germany, the Netherlands, France and Finland announced on Wednesday and Thursday that they were sending their soldiers to the island (in varying numbers, i.e. from one to a dozen or so soldiers) – they will take part in the Operation Arctic Endurance exercises, which will last until Saturday. Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated on Thursday that Poland does not plan to send soldiers to Greenland.
Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz was asked at a briefing in Warsaw, after a meeting with the Lithuanian Minister of Defense, about his critical assessments of Poland's decision in this matter, including: Gen. Roman Polko, who in an interview with Onet said that it was “sheer cowardice and a big mistake, burying one's head in the sand and not getting involved.”
Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz emphasized that this is a Polish strategy where the unity of the West and the unity of the alliance come first. — Poland wants to maintain the unity of the alliance, Poland cares about what is important for our common security. And what is important? This is cooperation between allies, led by the United States, he said.
“There is no NATO without the USA”
— There is no NATO without the United States, and there is no strength and power of the United States without participation in the North Atlantic Alliance. So Poland's role as a transatlantic ship is to connect. And today it is important that Denmark, which we respect very much, which we thank very much and which has the exclusive right to Greenland as its dependent territory, we confirm this, reaches an agreement with the USA – said the head of the Ministry of National Defense.
He thanked the Danish authorities for their efforts. He emphasized that Poland is open to cooperation with Denmark and joint military exercises with it.
— There is no need for any emotional response. Poland will connect NATO, connect allied countries and support these relations. And we will do everything to prevent any bad events between the allies, added the head of the Ministry of National Defense.
Donald Trump has repeatedly spoken in recent days about the need to take over Greenland. He speculated, among other things, that if the US does not take control of Greenland, China or Russia will do it. He rejected other solutions, such as increasing the presence of US troops there and the NATO mission on the island proposed by Germany. In a recent interview with the New York Times, he said the US may have to “choose” between Greenland and NATO.
