US President Donald Trump has stepped up his rhetoric about gaining control of Greenland, claiming that the United States “they need Greenland for national security purposes”.

In a post on social networks, Trump stated that “NATO should be at the forefront of the effort for us to get it” and that “if we don't do it, Russia or China will, and that won't happen!”.

“Militarily, without the enormous power of the United States, much of which I built in my first term and which I am now taking to a new and even higher level, NATO would not be an effective force or deterrent — not even remotely! They know it, and I know it.”Trump said.

He added: “NATO becomes much more formidable and effective with Greenland in the hands of the United States. Any other option is unacceptable”.

His comments come ahead of a meeting between the foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland and US officials, including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, at the White House on Wednesday.

During the meeting, the two sides are expected to discuss the tense situation created by President Donald Trump's statements regarding Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory.

Since returning to power, Trump has repeatedly said the United States could take control of the strategic but sparsely populated Arctic island. The Republican billionaire claims that the acquisition of Greenland would be necessary to counter the influence of Russia and China in the Arctic.
