“We warn that any armed forces, especially the aggressive US military, will be attacked if they attempt to approach and enter the Strait of Hormuz,” Abdollahi wrote. The military also stressed that it would respond sharply to any threat.

Tehran also demanded that commercial ships and tankers not make any movements in the strait without coordination with the Iranian military. “We have said many times that the security of the Strait of Hormuz is in our hands, and the safe transfer of ships is to be coordinated with the (Iranian) armed forces,” the command stressed.

The direct reason for the Iranian warnings is Operation Project Freedom, which was announced by President Donald Trump on Sunday. It assumes that from Monday, US forces will provide protection for commercial vessels during transit through the Strait of Hormuz.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) described in a separate statement how the US would engage its military. “US military support for Project Freedom will include guided missile destroyers, over 100 land- and sea-based aircraft, multi-domain unmanned platforms and 15,000 soldiers,” the US army said.
