Greenland's security and defense belong to NATO, Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said on Monday. He recalled that his country is part of Denmark, a member state of the North Atlantic Alliance.

“The Government of Greenland will therefore strive to ensure that defense development in and around Greenland takes place in close cooperation with NATO,” Nielsen emphasized in a post on Facebook.
He added that this should be done in dialogue with allies, including the United States, and in cooperation with Denmark.
According to the Greenlandic public broadcaster KNR, Nielsen is going to Copenhagen, where he plans to stay until January 20 due to the development of the situation.
Earlier, also on Monday, the Nielsen government, which since last spring consists of four parties, he opposed another statement by US President Donald Trump about the need to acquire Greenland.
“There is no way the government coalition can agree to this,” it emphasized in a written statement. They also assured of their willingness to “increase efforts” to defend Greenland under the auspices of NATO.
Staying in the capital of Croatia – Zagreb, Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance Mark Rutte said on Monday that NATO countries are discussing and working on the next steps to jointly ensure the security of the Arctic.
A group of European countries, led by Britain and Germany, are discussing plans to increase their military presence in Greenland to convince US President Donald Trump that Europe takes security in the Arctic seriously, Bloomberg reported on Sunday. According to anonymous sources cited by Bloomberg, Germany intends to propose the creation of a joint NATO mission to monitor and protect security interests in the Arctic region. (PAP)
