The dog was hit twice by the driver of a Nissan Qashqai in Pustomyty on January 8. Zoo activist and shelter director Orest Zalipsky was the first to talk about the incident and publish a video from a security camera. The dog was taken to Domivka and was under the supervision of veterinarians.
“The whole country was rooting for her. A story with a wild resonance, thousands of distributions and faith in a miracle… So much sympathy and so many people… But even this sometimes does not save from the cruelty that has already occurred,” the shelter noted.
The animal was scheduled to undergo a number of surgeries, including removal of a diaphragmatic hernia, surgery for a displaced intestine, surgery to remove a needle from the stomach, and further treatment for the consequences of spinal injuries. The first complex intervention was supposed to take place on January 11, but before the operation Naidi’s heart stopped.
“At the stage of preparation for the operation, after the administration of premedication, Naida’s breathing and heartbeat stopped. She was urgently transferred to the operating room, connected to a ventilator, and an incision was made in the peritoneum for direct heart massage. Resuscitation measures lasted 15–20 minutes. But she did not respond. Therefore, we declared death,” the veterinarian said.
The next day, animal volunteers will hand over the dog's body for an official autopsy.
“All data will be added to the case file for investigation and bringing the perpetrators to justice! She left, but you and I must bring the matter to the end,” Domivtsi emphasized.
As police previously reported, law enforcement officers found out the identity of the driver suspected of hitting the dog. He turned out to be a 28-year-old resident of one of the villages in the Lviv region. Investigators opened criminal proceedings on the fact of cruelty to animals (Part 1 of Article 299 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
