Folk calendar

Anisin's day

This day was named in honor of Saint Anisia, who lived in the 3rd-4th centuries in Greece.

Anisya (Anisiya) in Rus' was nicknamed the Stomachwoman, because according to ancient custom, on her day they slaughtered pigs and boiled tripe, including stomachs. And before eating the entrails, they were used for fortune telling.

There were several traditional recipes for preparing stomachs (or, as they were also called, kendyukhs). For example, they were stuffed with brisket, onions and salt, and then fried over a fire. Boiled stomach, also stuffed, but with meat from the head of a pig, was popular.

Since Anis’s Day is also the height of Christmastide, the traditions of these two holidays are mixed. The men had a special pastime – boar hunting. If successful, the boar was carried to the village on horns, showing it to all residents. After this, the girls began preparing festive dishes.

By this day the frost usually intensified. That’s why people said: “Don’t ask Anisya for warmth”; “The cold has come to Anisya.”

By the way, another belief that has survived to this day is associated with Anisya’s popular nickname. It is believed that this saint helps with stomach diseases.
