Theories have circulated online suggesting that Birmingham's pink lights were the result of an unusual sunset or perhaps a surprise appearance of the famous northern lights.

The mystery of the purple sky over Birmingham has been solved. Aerial photographs of the city taken on Friday evening show a pink glow from Birmingham City Football Club's turf growth lights, lighting up both the sky and the city.

“Sorry, it's just our lights”reads the description of a post by the Championship club, in which they take “blame” for the incident.

  • The lights used by the club were LEDs, which help to grow the grass on the pitch, a common practice used by the staff of several clubs. The bright lighting of the sky came amid heavy snowfall from Storm Goretti, so the pink light reflected off the snow in the city

“Atmospheric conditions with low clouds and even during snowfall can make the sky a little more reflective and show a glow from street lights, buildings and even the purple lights of the football stadium”said an English meteorologist, according to the BBC.

Storm Goretti, the first named storm of 2026 to hit the UK, has caused chaos across the country. Snow and ice warnings are in place across much of Britain as tens of thousands of people are still without power after the storm. The city of Birmingham did not escape this snowstorm either.
