Folk calendar

Scary day

The terrible day received such a name because on this evening the evil spirits were especially rampant. To protect yourself from her tricks, it was customary to perform certain rituals. They brought stakes from Krasnaya Gorka that had been left there the day before and piled them in the yard. The old men shook the straw from their beds. The healer brought coals from the stove and lit a fire. It was believed that all diseases and troubles should burn out in the fire.

Previously, there were many scary stories dedicated to this day. They, as well as fairy tales, were told to children in the evening. In addition, it was customary to ask riddles. We started with serious, educational ones – about the world around us, nature and work – and later moved on to humorous ones – about household items and pets.

By the way, on this day children were supposed to be especially carefully protected from evil forces – with prayers and kind care. While parents were busy with their children, young people spent time at gatherings. The Christmas festivities continued, and even the Scary Day and the supposed rampant evil spirits did not stop the boys and girls from having fun.

There were also special weather signs for this day. In particular, they said that if the north wind blows and there are no clouds in the sky, then frosts will soon begin.
