Daniil Medvedev (29, 13 ATP) got 2026 off to a great start, winning the 22nd title of his career after defeating Brandon Nakashima (24, 33 ATP) 6-2, 7-6 (1) in the final of the ATP 250 tournament in Brisbane.
Daniil Medvedev played on Sunday, January 11, the 41st final of his career, he having a record of 21-19 before the last act in Brisbane. On the other side was Brandon Nakashima, a tennis player with only one title, won in 2022, in San Diego.
Daniil Medvedev wins in two sets against Brandon Nakashima
The Russian made an excellent start to the duel in Australia and won the opening set 6-2, managing two breaks in the first 3 games. Conversely, the second sequence was not as balanced, requiring a tie-break.
A key moment of the second set was at 5-4 for Medvedev when he came back from 0-30 down and he had two match balls. Nakashima saved both, leveled at 5 and sent the sequence into a tie-break.
The 29-year-old tennis player managed the last game excellently and secured 5 match points, leading 6-1. Medvedev needed just one ball to close out the final and claim his 22nd career title, 6-2, 7-6 (1) after one hour and 34 minutes.
In 2025, Daniil Medvedev played two finals: he lost in Halle and won in Almaty. In 2019, he lost the final of the Brisbane tournament, 4-6, 6-3, 2-6, against Japan's Kei Nishikori.

Daniil Medvedev: “I want to dedicate this victory to my family”
Hello everyone! First of all I would like to congratulate Brandon who came back and came close to taking the match to the decider. I wish him success in Australia and beyond. I would like to thank my team here, a great start to the year. To all those who are not here, thank you!
I want to dedicate this victory to my family. It's not easy, I decided to play this tournament, I thought we would all come. I didn't succeed, so I dedicate the title to my one-year-old child.
I thank the sponsors, the organizers, the rain as well. It's a great tournament, it's my second time here. I came back 7-8 years later and got the trophy. I also thank the fans. I saw that you were more supportive of Brandon in the end, but I know you guys are fair. We will probably meet again

Brandon Nakashima: “Thanks to my team, only they know how hard I've worked”
First of all, congratulations to Daniil, he played very well. I wish you all the best for the rest of the season. I want to thank the organizers, I can say for sure that I enjoyed this week. Thanks to my team, only they know how hard I've worked in the last month. They believed in me and stood by me through the hard times.
Thanks to my family, my dad flew here to see the final. But don't give him too much credit, he would have come to Australia for the Australian Open anyway. Last but not least, thank you to the fans who came out this week and supported us. It was a great first tournament of the year
