It is reported that the incident occurred on the afternoon of January 10.
“The border patrol of the Cherepkivtsi department discovered a Range Rover SUV with a foreign registration. The car was moving towards the Ukrainian-Romanian border,” the Western Regional Directorate of the State Border Guard Service said on Facebook. “The driver ignored the requirement […] stop and continued moving towards the border guards, creating a threat to the life and health of the border guards with a dangerous maneuver.”
The driver of the car tried to overcome the line of engineering barriers and illegally travel to Romania.
After the border guards fired warning shots upward, the driver turned around and fled the scene.
The State Border Guard Service noted that one of the border guards was injured during the maneuver – he received multiple severe injuries.
The border guard was hospitalized and operated on; there is no threat to his life.
A few hours later, the SUV was found on the outskirts of one of the settlements in the border area.
A helicopter, UAV operators and sniffer dogs were involved in the search operations.
“Law enforcement officers detained six citizens of Ukraine. As it was established, these persons were in a vehicle when they tried to break through the specified car across the Ukrainian-Romanian border. The search for the driver who tried to make an illegal break into Romania continues,” the Western Regional Directorate of the State Border Guard Service said in a statement.
