The Welshman, aged 35, was out of contract after parting ways with Mexican club Pumas UNAM in 2025.

Aaron Ramsey retires from football

Ramsey retires as one of the greatest players in Wales history, with 21 goals in 86 caps and appearances in three major tournaments for the national team. The Welshman made his senior national team debut in 2008, aged just 17.

He was instrumental in the Welsh side's historic run to the semi-finals of Euro 2016, a performance which earned him a place in UEFA's Team of the Tournament. Ramsey subsequently featured at Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup, Wales' first appearance at a world finals tournament after a 64-year absence.

In a post on social media, Ramsey thanked the Wales supporters and the clubs he has represented throughout his career.

It was not an easy decision. After much consideration, I have decided to retire from football. First, I want to start with Wales. It has been a privilege to wear the Welsh shirt and experience so many incredible moments. This would not have been possible without the tremendous contribution of all the coaches I worked with and the entire staff who helped me in countless ways.

To the Red Wall. You have been with me through thick and thin! You have been there through the good times and the bad times and have been an essential and indispensable part of our success. I can't thank you enough. We've been through it all together and it's been an honor to represent you. Diolch (no – “thank you” in Welsh).

Secondly, thank you to all the clubs I was lucky enough to play for. Thanks to all the coaches and staff who helped me live my dream and play at the highest level.

And a huge thank you to my wife, children and my entire family. Without you by my side, none of this would have been possible.

The midfielder began his career at Cardiff City before moving to Arsenal in 2008. His career continued with spells at Juventus and Nice, as well as a loan spell at Rangers, who he helped reach the 2022 Europa League final, but missed a penalty in the shoot-out.

Ramsey also had a second spell at boyhood club Cardiff, where he also briefly held the position of caretaker manager at the end of last season.

The move to the Pumas was motivated by a desire to stay fit in order to play for Wales at this summer's World Cup should the team qualify. Unable to find a new club after leaving Mexico, Ramsey decided to end his playing career.
