Serious allegations at Constanța County Hospital: Two-year-old child, brain dead after being operated on for intestinal volvulus

The family of a two-year-old and five-month-old child accuses the medical staff at the Constanța Emergency County Clinical Hospital of inadequate medical care, after the little one was operated on for intestinal volvulus. According to the family, the child's condition worsened later, reaching septicemia and multiple organ dysfunction, and is currently brain dead.

The child's relatives told the local publication Ziua de Constanța that, on the night of December 17 to 18, 2025, the little one had severe abdominal pain. He was rushed to Constanța County Hospital, where, after a few hours of investigations, he was diagnosed with intestinal volvulus with necrosis. The surgery took place the next day around noon.

After the operation, the child's health deteriorated rapidly, being complicated by septicemia and multiple organ dysfunction. The family claims that, for three days after the surgery, the child would not have been consulted by a neurosurgeon, and over the weekend he would not have been seen by the doctor on call for approximately 24 hours. Relatives also blame the delay in the transfer to a specialized pediatric hospital.

According to the family's accounts, on December 21, 2025, the child was transferred to the Children's Emergency Clinical Hospital “Grigore Alexandrescu” from Bucharest. Here, imaging investigations indicated severe cerebral edema, blockage of blood flow to the brain, pneumothorax, and multiple organ failure. Later, tests confirmed the onset of brain death.

“It's outrageous how a child ends up brain dead because of the carelessness, arrogance and lack of responsibility of some medical staff, in a system where empathy and responsibility should be fundamental, especially when a child's life is at stake.” said the little boy's family.

The child's family sent a public message to the Minister of Health, Alexandru Rogobete, complaining about the serious situation in the medical system: “How many more lives will be lost before we can change something? People will never change!”, adding that in the hospital in Constanta “You enter alive and leave dead”.

Until this moment, the representatives of the Constanța Emergency County Clinical Hospital have not offered an official point of view regarding the accusations brought by the family.
