Folk calendar
Household Day, or Christmas Meat Eater.
The meat eater was not a holiday; it marked the beginning of a long period of a certain way of life for the Orthodox peasant – a time when meat could be eaten. In addition to religious motives, this was also due to the fact that in the first days of January it was customary to slaughter cattle. Consequently, meat appeared on the table – primarily pork. However, this did not cancel the weekly fast on Wednesdays and Fridays. People used to say: “Meat is a meat eater, but a lean person has his turn.”
At this time, the time for weddings began. When, if not in Myasoed, could young families set a rich table for guests? And since the Christmas meat-eater was long (it lasted until Maslenitsa), there was enough time for cheerful marriage rituals and feasts.
The meat eater was also called Household Day. The whole family gathered in the house: they did housework together and sat down at the table together. This day reminded us that family harmony is the most precious thing a person can have. “When there is harmony in the family, every now and then there will be arguments, and prosperity will be born,” people said.
And on the eve of Domochadtsev's Day, stakes were brought to Krasnaya Gorka, which was near every village, and driven into the ground. In the morning, families came to the hill: everyone tied a piece of fabric on a stake and made a wish. The Meat Eater and Christmas festivities continued. Guests gathered in the houses and played various games.
There were also signs for the weather for this day. It was believed that if frost fell on the stacks on this day, then the summer would be rainy.
