Images from the white inferno from Rânca: snow removal in blizzard conditions and almost zero visibility on DN 67C
DRDP Craiova distributed, on Thursday evening, spectacular images captured during the snow removal operations in the Rânca mountain area, which show the large amounts of snow, the strong blizzard and the extremely reduced visibility faced by road users. The interventions take place on DN 67C – Transalpina, one of the most affected mountain roads.

“This is the image that the attendant of a large-capacity milling machine sees through the windshield, during interventions on mountain roads. Images captured today, 01/08/2026, on DN 67C – Rânca”, sent the representatives of DRDP Craiova, who published photos and video images of the machines in full action.
The institution's specialists explain that the tiller is a specialized machine for interventions in extreme winter conditions, being capable of removing very large volumes of snow, including hardened snow or massive accumulations formed following a blizzard. The machine works by milling the snow and evacuating it at a distance, outside the roadway, thus preventing the narrowing of the road.
According to DRDP Craiova, these machines are mainly used to ensure the gauge of the roadway, by removing the snow pushed on the approaches by classic snow removal blades, for interventions in areas with a very heavy layer of snow or on heavily windy sectors, but also for crossing and clearing mountain roads temporarily closed to traffic during the winter, such as DN 67C – Transalpina.
The DRDP representatives also state that the snow plows are the property of CNAIR and are part of the national technical equipment for snow removal. Each Regional Directorate of Roads and Bridges manages several such machines, which can be mobilized quickly, depending on the needs, in the areas most affected by weather conditions.
By using these high-capacity equipment, CNAIR and the regional road authorities ensure effective interventions even in extreme winter conditions, to maintain or reopen traffic on mountain roads.
