The White House told Reuters on Tuesday that US President Donald Trump and his team were discussing options for “acquiring Greenland”, which the current US administration considers “a national security priority”.

“President Trump has made it well known that acquiring Greenland is a national security priority for the United States and is vital to deterring our adversaries in the Arctic region. The president and his team are discussing a range of options to pursue this important foreign policy objective, and of course the use of the US military is always an option available to the commander-in-chief,” the White House said in a statement in response to questions from Reuters.

Greenland, an autonomous territory that belongs to Denmark, a NATO member country, was mentioned by President Donald Trump and after the operation in Caracas, where the United States forces captured the Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and his wife to bring them to American justice.

Trump has repeatedly said he wants the U.S. to take control of Greenland and returned to the subject on Sunday, telling The Atlantic magazine: “We need Greenland, absolutely. We need it for defense.”

The US leader described the island as “surrounded by Russian and Chinese ships”.

Message from European leaders: “Greenland belongs to its people”

On Tuesday, leaders of major European powers voiced their support for Denmark and Greenland in a joint statement, saying the Arctic island belongs to its people.

“Greenland belongs to its people. Only Denmark and Greenland, and no one else, can decide on matters concerning Denmark and Greenland,” said the statement signed by the leaders of France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, Great Britain and Denmark, according to Reuters.

European leaders said security in the Arctic must be ensured collectively with NATO allies, including the United States.

“NATO has made it clear that the Arctic region is a priority, and European allies are stepping up their efforts,” the statement added. “We and many other allies have increased our presence, activities and investments to keep the Arctic safe and deter adversaries.”
