Romania is to host a European infrastructure of crucial importance. The confirmation came even from the head of the European Executive, Ursula von der Leyen, through an official document recently arrived from Brussels, in response to the request of MEP Victor Negrescu.

PSD MEP Victor Negrescu announced, on Tuesday, that his approach regarding the creation of the European Maritime Security Hub on the Black Sea in Romania has the support of the European Commission. “A concrete step for the security of the Black Sea and for Romania. I received an official response from the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

“The Commission's message is clear: the maritime hub can be created, the European Commission supports this approach and such a decision depends on the riparian member states, and Romania has all the arguments to host this strategic center”, continued the MEP.

Negrescu says that this hub is “crucial”, because “the Black Sea has become one of the most sensitive geopolitical regions of Europe, in the context of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine”.

“We are talking about the security of maritime routes, protecting critical infrastructure (cables, energy, ports), combating hybrid threats and increasing the European Union's reaction capacity. The hub would mean more security, more coordination and a real European presence in the Black Sea, not just declarations”, added Negrescu.

Ursula von der Leyen: The European Commission is ready to support the decision

In the response of the President of the European Commission, made public by Negrescu on Tuesday, Ursula von der Leyen thanks the MEP and the co-signatories “for the letter regarding the establishment of a Maritime Security Hub in the Black Sea, as provided for in the EU Strategic Approach for the Black Sea region, adopted on May 28, 2025”.

“Your support for this new policy is highly appreciated. We have taken note of the substantive arguments in favor of hosting the Maritime Security Hub in Romania. This is a decision to be taken by the EU member states. I can assure you that the European Commission is ready to support a decision of the riparian states, including Romania, in this regard”, writes Ursula von der Leyen.

Also, the head of the European Executive recalls that a series of EU policy initiatives were developed in response to the geopolitical challenges generated by Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine.

“All these initiatives bring an increased focus on awareness, preparation, resilience, security and defense. In this context, the Black Sea Maritime Security Hub will capitalize on the initiatives of EU member states and partner countries in the Black Sea region to strengthen maritime security and safety and aim to contribute to the monitoring and protection of critical maritime infrastructure, as well as to the development of EU member states' maritime means and capabilities for this purpose,” the document also states.

The next step rests with the authorities in Bucharest, who must finalize the technical details for hosting the hub, so that the project is subject to the final approval of the member states
