A series of avalanches in the Italian Alps. At least three people are dead


The most serious accident occurred in the Valle Maira valley in the province of Cuneo in Piedmont, near the border with France. A large avalanche carried away four people, one of whom, a foreigner, died. The lives of the remaining three are not in danger, ANSA reported.

According to the Quotidiano Nazionale website, the victim is a German woman, and one of the injured is her husband. Another tragic avalanche occurred near the town of Bobbio Pellice near Turin, the capital of Piedmont. A man, described by local media as a French citizen, died. His companion is in a state of shock, but managed to reach the shelter safely.
Near the town of Pragelato, also near Turin, a woman was injured in an avalanche. A helicopter with a rescue team was sent to the site, the Corriere della Sera daily reported. In a separate incident in the province of Vicenza in Veneto, a falling mass of snow carried away a 50-year-old alpine skier from Venice. The rescue team reached him by helicopter but failed to save him.
The avalanche danger has increased in the Alps in recent days due to heavy snowfall and strong winds, Reuters reported.
