When asked about the matter during a press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Florida, Trump said that the central bank governor, who has been repeatedly criticized by him, should himself resign before the end of his term in May next year.

– He is approaching (the end of his term). We're pretty close now. I would love to fire him, but we are so close, you know… but maybe… maybe I will anyway, said the US president.

Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to fire Powell, whom he accused of cutting interest rates too slowly. However, he said that he was dissuaded from doing so by Finance Minister Scott Bessent, who claimed that such a move, which undermined the principle of central bank independence, would lead to investor panic.

The president also said Monday that he was considering filing a lawsuit against Powell for “incompetence” over the excessive costs of renovating Federal Reserve buildings. Trump claims that renovation costs will reach $4 billion. According to Powell, the cost is 2.5 billion.
