Referendum on Donbas? Zelensky rules out Ukrainians agreeing to concessions

In the interview, Zelensky referred to Russia's key demand that Ukraine leave the areas of Donbas that are not yet occupied by Russian forces. The President of Ukraine noted that although Donald Trump, the US president, was right when he said during Sunday's press conference that Ukrainians want peace, their goal is a just peace that does not involve giving up sovereignty over eastern territories.

Zelensky: Ukrainians want a just peace
“People want peace today. President Trump said he saw polls saying that 85, maybe 87 percent want peace. This is our life. 87 percent support it, but at the same time 85 percent are against withdrawal from the east, from Donbas. Everyone wants peace, but a just peace.” – Zelensky explained.

The Ukrainian leader noted that withdrawal from Donbas would be the “worst solution” and would not be accepted by society. He added that a referendum on this matter would have a negative result.
According to American proposals that appeared during the talks, the areas of Donbas abandoned by Ukrainian troops would be transformed into a demilitarized zone and a special economic zone. However, as Zelensky emphasized in a conversation with journalists via WhatsApp, negotiations on this matter are at a very early stage and detailed arrangements are lacking. The Kremlin, however, described these talks as “premature”.

Zelensky does not agree with Trump's words about Putin. “I don't see it”
Asked by Fox News journalist Bret Baier whether, like Donald Trump, he believed that Vladimir Putin wanted the war to end, Zelensky replied “honestly, no.”
“I don't see it because I can't hear it. In public, he doesn't talk about peace. He says he can go further.” – added the president of Ukraine.
Fragments of the interview with Volodymyr Zelensky were published before the premiere of the full interview, which will be broadcast on the night from Monday to Tuesday, Polish time.
