Folk calendar
Danilov day
On this day the memory of saints Daniel, Ananias, Azarias and Misail is celebrated.
In Rus' on this day, girls tried to get from Saint Daniel at least a drop of his insight. To do this, the names of his three friends – Ananias, Azariah and Misail – were written on three laurel leaves and placed under the pillow. At night, the betrothed was sure to appear.
People said that “Danila is rushing December,” bringing Christmas and New Year closer. “On Danilov’s day there was a smell of the holy spirit and incense,” imagined the most impatient.
On this day, special attention was paid to fire. “The housewife lit the stove so that there would be enough heat for two days,” people remarked. At night, huge fires were lit, saying: “Disperse the fire, the darkness, reduce the cold.”
Pay attention to weather signs. It was believed that if frost appeared on the trees on Danil, then Christmastide would be warm. If a snowstorm began, this meant that bees would swarm well in the summer.
