Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, said that several European leaders had an hour-long telephone conversation with Trump and Zelenski regarding the peace negotiations, on the sidelines of the meeting between the two at Mar-A-Lago. “There has been important progress, which I welcome,” she said, according to the New York Times.

She added in a second social media post: “Europe stands ready to continue working with Ukraine and our American partners to build on these advances. Central to this effort is having strong security guarantees from day one.”

A spokesman for British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who sat in on the phone call between Trump, Zelenskiy and European leaders, said the discussion focused on “efforts to secure a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.”

European leaders congratulated Trump “on the progress made so far,” the spokesman added. “They stressed the importance of strong security guarantees and reaffirmed the urgency of ending this barbaric war as quickly as possible.”

Polish President Karol Nawrocki, who also attended the call, said in a statement posted on social media that he thanked Trump for today's “conversation” but that “any agreements on peace and security in the region must be concluded between all interested parties” and that Poland's position on any peace agreement was “crucial.”

In his message, Nawrocki twice emphasizes that the war in Ukraine was “caused by Russia”.

The conversation between Trump, Zelenski and European leaders lasted more than an hour, and the leaders discussed “concrete measures” to end the war, Finnish President Alexander Stubb wrote in a post on X.

Among the participants in the call were the leaders of Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Norway, as well as the Secretary General of NATO and the President of the European Commission.
